Default I'm free! Odd dropoff experience and parting thoughts.

I've mentioned in a few threads that I've participated in that I'd had enough of my XC60 and had ordered a Genesis GV70 2.5t Prestige. That was back in March, fast forward to last Thursday and I got a call letting me know that there was a black on black GV70 available for MSRP at Genesis of Atlanta. I literally dropped everything and started the buying process. It had just come off the truck so I had to wait to pick it up until Saturday so that it could be prepped and cleaned up.

I'll be honest, I did no research into Volvo or the XC60 before I got mine. I'd heard good things about them but the selling point was the subscription plan. I got my XC60 in August of 2021 when it was very difficult to get anything new. If I had done the same amount of resarch into finding a replacement for the Volvo before I got the Volvo I never would have gone near the brand. Volvo has consistently ranked near the bottom of the JD power ranking for quality and dependability. Usually I'd scoff at the JD Power awards because it seems like every car has won one. However, both the Initial Quality Award and the Dependability Award are based on hard data, number of complaints/issues per 100 cars sold. On the flip side, Genesis has been one of highest ranked for a few years running now. In addition to all these awards the brand has won, the GV70 was named one of the best new cars of 2022 by Autotrader, it won the 2022 best SUV of the year by Motortrend, was named a 2022 IIHS Top Safety Pick, and is Edmund's top rated SUV of 2022.

Best part, all of the features that Genesis says that the car has, actually work. To name a few examples, Carplay works, Android Auto works, the mobile app works (and has a ton of functionality), Sirius XM works (and has full functionality like setting favorite songs, redording, etc.) the screens don't flicker, the drive modes work, the trip odometer works (resets when it's supposed to), and the profile switcher works. I can honestly say that I used to be embarrassed about the Volvo when my friends and family asked me things about it. Couldn't believe I was driving a car with an MSRP of $61k that had such so many things wriong with it. In comparison, the GV70 had an MSRP of $58k (the factory installed $700 worth of stuff that I couldn't get rid of). The only things it doesn't have that the XC60 did are a HUD and rear seat heaters.

The delivery experience at Genesis was really special. The salesman sat my wife and I in the car and went through EVERYTHING. He set up our profiles, paired our phones, and made sure that we were 100% on how everything worked before he sent us on our way. (In comparison, when I picked up the volvo last year the salesperson told me that all I had to do was log in with my gmail account and it would be just like my phone, so no need for him to walk me through everything.)

We went straight to the Volvo dealership to hand over the XC60 after getting the GV70. There were a few people in there actually looking at cars but we managed to find a salesperson to help us. This is where things got strange.
First off, nobody in the place asked why we were turning it back in before the subscription was done. I was honestly expecting some kind of effort to find out why I was turning it in and a push to get me to keep it or to swap to a different model. There was none of that.
Second, the guy had to go get my tag and write down the milage. As he was walking out, he saw the GV70 parked next to the XC60. He asked if that's what I'd replaced the XC60 with and after I said yes he went on and on about how it was such a beautiful car and so well put together and so on. It got super awkward because EVERYONE could hear him and was giving him confused looks, even the customers. Finally he goes out to get the plate off the XC60 and he's plainly walking around my new car and peering in the windows. He then came back inside (without the XC60 tag or milage) to ask if I'd mind showing him the inside. This actually caused the few customers that were in there to actually turn their heads and look out the window. So I gave him the keys and said "Have at it" expecting him just to pop his head in and take a look around. Not my guy, he got in it, cranked it up, went and sat in the back seats, looked around the trunk, and finally pops the hood for a look. Then he locks it up, takes the plate off the XC60, writes down the milage, and comes back inside. He gives me my keys and goes off to do whatever with the paperwork. By this time, BOTH couples that were looking at Volvos had left. No idea what their reasoning was, but I'd be willing to bet that the guy helping me out had some influence. As soon as he'd returned with the paperwork we hightailed it out of there.

I'm not writing this to brag or to gloat. If it comes across like that then I do apologize. I was severely disappointed by Volvo considering I'd always heard that they were a quality brand. It's a releif to be rid of the XC60 because I don't feel like I'm paying for something I wasn't getting. I honestly felt cheated to a degree, that I'd been sold a lemon. i know there are people in here that think "Oh, these are minor things and we need to be understanding and give Volvo a chance". I'm sorry but Volvo isn't a charity case that I should feel sorry for or "let slide" because they don't deliver on their promises. They haven't issued any kind of apology to me (or any of you) for the poor quality of this automobile or given any kind of rebate or incentive. The fine print and wording of their sales contracts and owners manuals, freeing them from any real level of responsibility, is proof that they would rather spend more money on lawyers than product developers. I wish you all the best of luck as you continue to suffer with this brand or move on to another.

A few pictures of my GV70 because I think you'll all agree with the Volvo Salesman that helped me, it's bloody beautiful.

It looks like Genesis of Atlanta gave you the "required" $495 front window tinting. When I purchased mine 2 months ago I had them not put it on, and traded for locking lug nuts. (expensive wheel locks, but that's what you have to pay to get a new car!) Pictured next to wife's 2020 xc60 - with the software where everything works.

I can't blame you for dumping the problematic Google plagued XC60, but it's way to early to give us your true feelings on the luxury Hyundai (coughs) eerrr uhhh... I mean Genesis. This is like being on rebound from being dumped by your girlfriend and jumping on the first thing that winks her eyes at ya. Own it 2 years and report back. Seriously, not knocking it. It's a sharp car!

I'm in your camp - my personal cars have been MG's, Alfas, Maserati Biturbo (that was a mistake) Porsche turbo, BMW m5, M3, Many Volvos during that process, and now a Hyundai (sorry Genesis GV70). It was a difficult decision - X3 M40i, Audi Q5r (or whatever they call it), Glc43 Amg, Alfa, Maserati, Macan - What do you purchase if you don't want a 2.0 liter and want a 6 cyl small suv? (that the dealers are not adding $5-10k to in todays market?)

So for the first time - maybe the 375Hp/391 torque V6 in the Hyundai - will be OK - for a couple of years.

Ha! Yes they sure did! I went with the tint because it's something I was planning to do anyway (even though I know I overpaid). Love that color you got, the gray was actually my first choice with black as close second!

Fair enough. Kia/Hyundai/Genesis was not on my radar until I actually started doing my homework. I didn't mention that I visited at least 1 online car forum for each model that I considered. None of them paint as poor a picture as this one. I mean, two of the top posts on here are "XC60 2022 Nothing but problems" and "Anyone with a '22 XC60 and actually happy with it?" (which turned into a thread about people NOT happy). I'd be glad to report back in 6 months with my honest experience, even put it on my calendar.

I was reading a Quora post this morning regarding the cost of building Teslas in China and the point made was that its the battery packs that are the biggest contributor. My opinion is that its the software that makes a Tesla not the battery (recall the original batteries were from Samsung) and that all the switches/sensors come from global auto suppliers. I think this is the same issue with the next generation Volvos - they are still buying from global suppliers but they made a very aggressive bet to differentiate the cars via the software which has turned out to be a major source of their quality issues (I'm in the software/systems business and learned early on that software platform quality is iterative with internal competition for the developer resources forcing trade offs between new feature launches and platform hardening). I would not give up on Volvo quite yet but their management needs to take a hard look at taking a step back and addressing the software bugs as a priority or risk a market backlash. Hyundai has always taken a slightly more conservative approach in their products to favor quality over that extra 10% in performance or innovation. For most people, they don't use the extra 10% but do notice the quality so it seems Volvo missed that lesson. I'm taking a wait and see over the next year or so since my next car will either be a plug-in Hybrid or a full electric, and as much as I love their styling and feel, Volvo hasn't moved up on my short list to be a serious consideration.

so I have been thinking of doing the same thing after being stranded in my XC60 twice now but I am really curious what you mean by handed over your Volvo. My handing over my card comes with a 14k price tag on it. I paid 68 for a pretty loaded B6 inscription with a few pricey adds and Volvo said they would give me 54, if it’s in perfect condition. I only have 4K in miles on it. How did you just hand yours back after one year?

The poster didn't purchase the XC60, he/she was on the subscription plan, and chose to end the subscription early. If you purchased your Volvo that may be why your situation is different.

Like the guy above me said, I did the Volvo CARE subscription which allows you to return the car after 5 months or trade if for another Volvo with a 2 year (minimum 5 month) commitment. If you want to know why I'd be happy to explain.

Regarding your situation, you have options.
a) Try selling privately. It's a pain in the *** and you're going to eat the sales tax on it, but based on what you say you have you should easily get at least $60k for it. My car was $62k, I handed over the keys with 4500 miles on it and it's up on the dealer website now for $56k.
b) Start dropping the word "lemon" around your dealer, especially if you've been stranded twice. There was a post on here a while ago from a guy that threatened this and I think the dealership bought the car back from him because they didn't want to go through all the lemon law red tape.
c) Find out what another dealer will be willing to give you for your car. I wasn't able to trade mine in because the dealer I bought my Genesis from didn't like dealing with Volvo financial services. I would have had to buy my car outright from Volvo and then trade it for my new one. When I ran the numbers, the payoff amount + tax would have been more than they were willing to give me for a trade, so I just let it go.

Found this on another forum, hope it helps
