Default Injector Problem

Hello, XC60 D5 (205bhp) owner of many years (10+) first time stuck with a problem so hoping someone can help here ....

Had a problem with my injector (see engine code below) hence injector 4 was replaced by the relevant new Bosch part (read here second hand / remanufactured parts can cause problems). However when using the Snapon diagnostic tool with the relevant Volvo XC60 specific software the fault code would not clear / reset . When using the generic OBCD software, with the same diagnostic tool, no faults were registered once the injector was changed. Moreover although the car starts fine initially, the knocking returns when the engine has warmed up a bit and had a run. The actual fault given and which wont clear is "p1554-68 Cylinder 4 Injector Circuit Range / Performance . Algorithm Based Failures". Does anybody know or have any suggestions what this fault actually means and how best to cure the underlying problem and remove the faulty code?

Many thanks

Juts found 2 people with the exact same problem below - but no answers - hopefully the posts below, from what seem really knowledgeable people, will give some additional insight.

If you are going to replace an injector that you think is bad - always put the new part in a different cylinder and move one of the old ones to the cylinder where the alleged bad injector was. You might get more info to base your diagnosis on if a code comes back.

I see your logic but, Volvo injectors are coded and calibrated to the position in which they are fitted. Moving them around could result in problems. Especially on newer engines that have a higher Euro rating.

reading similar posts shows where those owners replaced the injector only to have the code reappear so I wouldn't hold out hope that a new part is the trick. The best answer I saw was to avoid using low quality fuel. I suppose you could start by trying some fuel additives / injector cleaners which are just detergents to help remove deposits. There are also injector cleaning services that use solvents/ultrasound etc to improve spray patterns. To hoonk's point - there's little downside to swapping injectors between adjacent cylinders. If the code moves with the injector you know its the part. If new codes appear, you've learned something and still have the option to move the part back to the original. Note most calibrations are based on "fuzzy logic" meaning the computer has a learning algorythm to help coach the trim to an optimal setting so there's nothing permanent that can happen by swapping parts.

The P1554-68 fault usually means the new injector hasn’t been coded to the ECU. On these Bosch injectors you need to enter the calibration code or the ECU will still see it as out of range. If it was coded and the fault remains, then check the wiring to injector 4 or consider a mechanical issue on that cylinder.
