Overheating issue!
Hi all,
I have 2013 Volvo XC60 t6 platinum.
i have replaced the thermostat, coolant temp sensor, the radiator fan module and flushed the coolant and replaced it with the green generic stuff. Both thermostat and sensor are OEM but not genuine.
The car will not overheat when driving on the highway or here and there city driving. It will overheat if I beat on it a little bit and then when I idle, it’ll reach 107 or higher if I let it and the fan doesn’t kick on at 105. It kicks on very rarely at 105 maybe 1 in 10 times. I have not let it overheat completely. I have an OBD2 scanner and watch it through there. I replaced the cooling fan module with a genuine volvo one and it worked well the first time it reached 100-105 but then I’m having the same issue. When I idle it will overheat if I sit there for too long. What am I missing???
i don’t receive any engine too hot lights or anything. I had a check engine for thermostat regulating temp before replacing it but that code has gone and stayed in permanent codes. It does not trip the cel anymore. I am very confused here. Please help.

when you say you are overheating are you saying that because of the guage or because you start to boil over or the engine feels/smells really hot? What happens when you turn on the heater (full fan)? Does the overheating happen with and without the AC on? Have you felt the hoses (wear gloves for this) when hot - are they pliable when the engine is running or do they get rock hard (suggesting some head gasket blow by)? If you are seeing the gauge peg but no other signs like a boil over or a smell, you may want to have a shop with a temp scanner see what temp the engine really is vs looking at the guage. A fully featured shop with a VIDA set up or similar can also measure the temp from the OBD port w/o trusting the gauge.

im watching it through the obd2 scanner. It’s live data on the scanner. It overheats even when the fan is on high blast with heat. If I turn on the AC, the small fan does kick on. The big one does not. I don’t have a temp gauge either. What I did notice is, I unplugged the temp sensor going into thermostat and the fans kicked on full speed. The part is not a genuine piece, could this be the issue?
Ok so here’s some new information:
-New thermostat and coolant sensor again (genuine volvo parts)
If I drive and beat on it and then idle, temp will creep up to 106 (first time) and the fan will kick on and drop down to 98. Then the temp will creep back up past 106 and the fans will NOT kick on. Once I turned it off at 107-108, the fans kicked on full speed. (This was when I shut car off) it only turns them on when car is off and hot.
any advice??
