Pure EV mode for hybrid only rear wheel drive?

Pure EV mode for hybrid only rear wheel drive?
My understanding is that the hybrid is only rear wheel drive while in pure EV mode with battery power only. If so, wouldn't this greatly reduce the handling of the hybrid on icy roads? I grew up with rear wheel drive only on snow and ice and have no desire to ever go back to it.
