Default Random auto start?

My XC 60 just started out of the blue in the garage. No one was near the key fob, which was in the house. And if it weren’t for the fact that I was sitting in our family room. No one would have known and the level of exhaust in the garage would’ve choked me out. Anyone have any idea why the car would start on its own. The only thing I can say is that it’s very cold here this morning at around 12°F we bought the car preowned so maybe there’s some type of feature that auto starts the car if it gets under a certain temperature?

Hi there,

I actually went to a local Volvo dealership for this exact issue this weekend (2021 S60 T5 Inscription AWD). Not sure if it's related to yours or what MY your XC60 is, but I'll share my experience.

Long story short, the techs had to troubleshoot with an Engineer in Sweden. Turns out that a lot of P3 and SPA 1 cars are having this issue (I'm not if AAOS cars are, but I know Sensus is for sure). It appears that there is a glitch where if you had sent a command to remote start the car, at a later point, several more commands will be sent thereafter. It also seems like the app is randomly sending commands to remote start. No rhyme or reason it seems. The Engineer/ Volvo corporate reported that over the past two weeks, they've been getting more and more reports of this issue.

There was someone else at the dealership that same day with a 2019 XC40, same issue. It *sounds* like the engineering team is still working on this, I don't have a case number or anything but since Saturday it has happened to me about 10 more times. Really frustrating, concerning, and a waste of fuel. And unsafe for you and other folks who park their car in their garage.

I guess the only way around it for now is to not lock the car (also unsafe), but that way at least the car won't start. I'll follow up here if I have an update.

Joe

Update: As of 1/27/2025, the technician at the Volvo dealership worked with the engineer and essentially reset my Volvo Cars app account (had to reset the pin and what not), but this issue still keeps occurring. Usually, I do one remote start and then 2-3 more commands are sent thereafter, I'll lock the car and I'll see it has started again in the app, will cancel the command, and thereafter the car starts automatically. Dealership is still working with Engineer in Sweden and building the case. Really annoying and bizarre. I'll update here if there is anything else I learn or they fix!

This could happen due to system settings, an application being set to run on startup, or background processes triggering without user input.

Hello,

Could you please explain more or guide me to any solutions you are aware of?

As of now, the Volvo dealership turned on the AT&T 3G hotspot modem and it looks like it’s on a trial. They reported that it’s likely due to interruptions in the AT&T network, which is what caused the multiple commands being sent.
