Default 1991 volvo 240 srarting issues

Hello.
I recently received a 1991 240
It has around 175,000 miles.
It runs good.
the issue is when it starts, sometimes it takes long to start.
I can turn the key, and the car tries to start, but sometimes it takes about 5-7 seconds for it to start and usually on the second or third try.

Sometimes while im still turning the key the starting noise of the car will completely die for a split second. But it will continue to try.

The book says not to turn the key for longer than 10-15it seconds.
It never takes that long, but common sense tells me to let go of the key way before then.

Also, I was told to "give it gas" at start up, which does help, but am I harming the car by giving it gas since the car is fuel injected??.

Another issue is, the car starts like a champ when its COLD outside.
If its over 60° it takes me a few tries to get it going.
If its under that, the car starts the second I turn the key and sounds wonderful. Im in south Texas, so its rare its THAT COLD. but the car starts quickly when its cold outside.

Also, if I've ran the car say to get the kids from school (2 mins away) then to he groceries (10mins) then back home, and the temperature is still on the 'cool', I notices it dies in the middle of parking. (I I have to side park) and as im straightening the car out, it'll die as soon as I put it in park.

The car has only had ONE owner, who kept up with it and room it to a certified Volvo dealer at any little noise (I I have lots of pprwrk)

Now that u have a background on my worries, do u think that's something that would be really expensive, or something that just happens with a worn car?

thank you so much for taking the time to read this.
I can try to post a vid or audio soon if that would be helpful.

A Volvo with 175k is NOT a worn car! Not by a long shot. I'd suggest you change the Engine Temperature Sensor and the Fuel Pressure Regulator. Both of them inc. labor should not be over $100. If the car has a history with a local shop you may want to continue the relationship. These cars are great but as all things some TLC is necessary every now and then, and it helps if the people doing the work know the car.

Thanks lev!
I appreciate you taking the time to answer my questions.

But if I may ask, is "giving it gas" during start up bad?
I don't ALWAYS do that, just by the third time with no starting success, if iI have to, I will, to get it started so I wont be stranded in a parking lot.
thanks again.

Fuel Injected cars are not supposed to need gas pedal pumping but once one is in trouble with a car refusing to fire up, anything goes!
