Default Whistling from engine bay.

Hi,

I'm having whistling noise from under the hood of my 2010 XC60 3.0T. It sounds when the engine is hot and the gas pedal is not pressed. What could be going wrong? Thanks.

Sometimes the pcv valve breaks and creates too much vacuum in the crank case. Try removing the dipstick when it is making the noise to see if it stops. If it does you probably have a problem with the PCV box/oil trap. It's a common problem and easy to replace.

Thank you. I'll try the trick.

Removed the dipstick and the noise was gone, and I heard it sounded like gas burst in (or out) from the opening. Does it mean that the pcv valve is bad?

It means there is something creating vacuum in the crankcase - probably a broken diaphragm in the PCV valve - That is not controlling the flow of vacuum (from the intake) into the pcv system. (in the round part of that box is a diaphragm and a valve - that if broken could be causing your whistling noise)

Understand. I'll replace the PCV valve. Do I also need to replace the gasket in the picture (30731243)? Watched few videos and they didn't mention it.

Common problem on many Volvo's Possitive crankcase valve is bad (PCV) if left will destoy all the seals , the actual seal that breaks costs is aroung 5 euros , but changing it costs a lot on most models due to the labour involved

Thanks. I'm just a little bit confused about the part number. My car is 2010 XC60 T6. Volvocars.com says both 31319642 and 31319643 fit. fcpeuro says 31319643 fits but 31319642 doesn't. tascaparts says 31319642 fits but 31319643 doesn't. I used both the latter two before and had no issues for part numbers, and volvocars should be the official website. So which one should I pick?

Call your local Volvo dealer parts department. Tell them you want a pcv box for your car. They will ask for your VIN number, year and model. With that info they will look up the part and give you a price. Ask for the part number and if you are shopping around decide what vendor you want to purchase from. For whatever vendor you choose online it would be best to use one that has a VIN verification system in their website to verify it's the correct part before it is shipped to you.

I'm glad that an aftermarket solution is available! A more reasonable choice!
