XC60 2022 Nothing but problems

Hi there,

First time poster so forgive me if in wrong area.

I bought the new XC60 2022 last month and so far its been nothing but a headache. Volvo cannot take the car to investigate for a few weeks so I am hoping to get some advice here.

1. TPMS system warning. Comes on intermittendly. All tyre pressures are green in Car status. Seems to be the monitoring system at fault.
2. Rear sensor for opening the rear door. Worked once when the sales agent gave me a demo when collecting the car. Never again.
3. Volvo on call. Stopped working last week. Says I need to pair a phone which is already paired. No option to remove it.
4. Google services not working. No radio, no DAB etc. Just stuck on loading data....

Is there anyway to do a reset of sorts to at least get some functionality to restart and have a radio again?

Regards,

same problem

I’ve got my new 2022 xc60 few days back and rear sensors for back door opening not working..

wireless charging generating heat while charging mobile

apple carplay/ android auto are not available.. dealers kept saying they may come with future updates .. don’t know exact timelines

Cruiter 08-24-2021 07:26 AM

Both Kegs Mcsorley and vynu, everything you described should be setup and explained to you by your dealer. I spent 20 years in the business and my strength was product knowledge. I've never heard of dealers telling you features that were indicated on the window sticker may need future updates to work. Take your cars back to the dealer and ask for a 'tech' specialist to help set your car up and explain it to you. Embarrass them if you need to !!!

My dealer spent about a half hour helping 'me' to set the car up so I would know how to plod along further if needed. Sometimes playing with all of the features in the setup screens can inadvertently turn something off.
As far as the updates, that is probably the maps updating. If so, you can stop it from updating a section of the country you're not likely to travel to, otherwise just be patient and let the updates happen. Other features can update that way as well.

Hope you wind up enjoying yours as much as I am mine.

bad bad bad system

my volvo dealer says it wait there an 2gb actualisation ,i dont know what is it and if this help

same problem by volvo

no carplay for ios -impossible in 2021!!

why volvo chose the unstable system from google? Everytime problem by start the system

no functionality

rafale 08-30-2021 09:50 AM

Volvo might very well have committed suicide by relying on Google for such a critical piece of software since it is not just infotainment but it controls a lot of things on the car. Android is fun for use with toys, it iis a piece of spyware and is designed to be free in exchange of pumping data to Google. Not sure who would want it to run their cars. I got burned really badly in the smarthome space and never will touch it again as they fight really hard to stop you from blocking their data thieving. It is not future proof and is unreliable/unsecure by design as it requires a lot of support and update and Google may at any time drop support for it as they have with so many of their projects and products.

If I were you guys, I would just return the car.

Well this post is rather unsettling. I am planning on visiting a dealer this weekend to look at a 2022, but after reading this I am having doubts. I researched the 2022 XC60 and it seems to get solid reviews. I will have to research more specifically on issues with the 2022.

vynu 08-30-2021 04:33 PM

poor usage of instrumental panel screen

  • other than displaying maps , rest of the screen is pretty much empty
  • when in active call with mobile, the feedback or status of the call window displayed right in the middle of screen which blocks maps view

Regards,

For number 3, a factory reset is needed. I had to do that the other day when I cleared the data from my Volvo on call app (my fault). The only way to remove the pairing from the car side is to do the factory reset. On the plus side, that might also fix number 4 for you as well.

The new Android Automotive OS doesn't run the critical functions of the car. That is handled by a separate kernel and processor. Android shares a video buffer with the critical OS so that it can show the map on the instrument panel, but it does not run any of the essential functions of the car (charging, instrument panel, engine, sensors, etc.).

Click the Settings gear in the bottom right corner, go to System, then Reset Options, then Erase all data (factory reset).

Domenico, seems some folk are bad mouthing the car when the problem may be the dealer didn't do a complete PDI before the customer delivery as well as not giving a proper demonstration of the features. Also they should have helped with the initial setup to customer specs as my dealer did.

Read from the top to the bottom of this chain How to activate wireless charging? - Volvo Forums - Volvo Enthusiasts Forum . It seems someone figured out how to do a factory reset that seemed to correct all of these issues. These are really pretty sophisticated cars and dealers need to do (sometimes) a better setup (PDI) and customer introduction to the way things operate. Also, they come with a really great warranty and "on-call" you can use at anytime 24/7. If/when you get one, make sure you find out who the "tech guru" as your dealer is. They will offer lots of good info that's factual.

I owned a 2020 Outback for the past ten months, and bought it new. Long story short, I got rid of it and bought a new '21 XC60 a week ago. The Outback had a stalling issue and dealers couldn't find the problem. I recalled how pleased I was with my '88 240DL manual shift, back then...drove that car 200,000 miles. This XC60 is my second Volvo. I agree with the previous post, about contacting your dealer for proper setup. Also, I suggest first reading about the settings. And, consider searching YouTube for instructional videos about the XC60. And most importantly for me, plenty of sitting in the car, at idle, and doing trial and error with the menu. I probably sat in my car for ten hours during the past week, going nowhere, learning the settings. And, I had to call Volvo customer service to properly setup Volvo OnCall, to link it with the phone App. But, for every other "malfunction", I eventually sorted it out myself and everything does work...it took time for me to discover the details and methodology of the menu. I have no regrets for this Volvo purchase. I've already driven it about 1000 miles, currently headed West on vacation, with 1000 more miles to be driven over the next two days. Today, driving it was a great and comfortable experience...not even tired. My XC60 runs and drives great.

Domenico 09-01-2021 08:59 AM

Thank you for the advice. I will continue to explore the option of purchasing one and whilst talking to the dealer include additional questions about the issues noted here.

A bit concerning on newer models

Reading through this thread I find it very concerning as the reliability of the xc60 or 90 lineup had been going downhill with numerous tech issues. I own a 2020 Xc60 and have been following this forum. I notice majority of the people having issues own a xc60 later than 2019… my xc60 after driving for a year had just been doing it’s basic job. Getting to point a to point b.

all the news about chip shortage resulting in features removed for Volvo leads me to believe they messed up the car overall performance and features

keep i mind 1) most people join car forums to find prices pad and 2) to find a solution to a problem they are having. So it may seen like there are a lot of issues, but in reality, most cars work as intended. Now did I buy an extended warranty for my 2019 T8.....yeppers, as Iplan to keep it for at least 10 yrs.. And being that I ride my motor cycle 99% of the time, should not be a problem, lol

Longhaul, when you said "methodology of the menu" you hit the nail on the head. It was good to see and somewhere down the line I'll probably 'shamelessly' use it as you did. Yep, having been in the business 20 years and owning the number of cars I have, there is no consistency in the way manufacturers design the way things operate. Cars are like people, they have many different personalities LOL.

And after 3 months of ownership, I still pull out of the garage after reading something in the manual or something someone said on this forum to check a setting or two before driving down the road (like you said). These cars today are best described as multiple computers linked to each other and 4 wheels with up to two engines and 400 HP (T8)

Hey guys,
new Volvo owner here (also English is not my native language so please exuse my spelling).

Volvo car has been a dream car for me for like 8 years. Now I have Volvo XC60 2022 and not sure what’s going on.

1) no remote start. Unbelievable. Volvo says they will update the app and the remote start will be available soon. Keep waiting.

2) weird thing happened yesterday while drivingDisplays went off while driving. The main display went pink and then completely off.The driver display went all yellow. AC and music was off.Had to park, stopped the car, started it over again. The driver display kept yellow, the main display booted back up in about 15 seconds. After that the driver display turned back to normal.

3) Starting today - Emission system sign illuminates. No idea what could cause it. The car has 500 mileage.
I’m having a long trip (about 5 hours drive one way) next week and now really worried.
Made a service appointment. But the nearest available service appointment is in 2,5 weeks.

4) map on driver’s display was off today. For now reason.

I’ve been having this car for just 2 weeks and so many issues already. So frustrating. I hope I didn’t make a mistake buying this car.

Welcome, and sorry you're having these issues. I'm not sure where you are or what you have to do to obtain service but here in the U S, you can make an appointment (as you did), or many times just drive in if it's urgent. Being as your car is new, I'd certainly try that and see what they can do. It's a great car with a great warranty but you have to be able to use it.
Great luck, let us know what happens please.

thank you so much for your kind words.
I am in North Carolina.

Local dealer told me that they were extremely busy and it would take days to diagnose the car if I just drive in.
so not sure what to do here and how crucial the emission system fault is.
I think I’ll give them another call tomorrow.

Possible cause of maladies; un-prepped new cars ???

I am retired from the auto business so I have no affiliation anymore with any dealer unless I'm on the property spending my money. That said, I see a lot of people here (and on some other forums as well) that are getting run-arounds from their dealers. Volvo will warranty your car at ANY Volvo dealer you take it to. In your case, I'd drive w/o calling into another one and ask for some help. Explain you just bought your car, what is happening, and could they please take a look. There is always the chance it's something very simple such as not installing fuses or latest updates that should be done during the PDI (Pre-Delivery Inspection). Are there any other dealers within say 50 miles you could go to? If you can't get satisfaction, then as the other gentleman said, call the number he listed and surely they can help you. I know if there was a problem that kept me from driving my new car in a safe manner and they just couldn't get to it or couldn't get the parts then I'd wind up with a loaner.
I just can't believe Volvo is shipping cars that aren't ready as I seem to be reading here. I'm more inclined to believe some dealers are doing shoddy Prep's. This Covid crisis has hit in many ways and not being able to keep qualified mechanics may be the cause of what we're seeing here. So many of the new owners '22 models seem to be having luck doing a factory 're-set' on their car. If it's something the dealer just hasn't done but should, it doesn't speak good for the dealer. And don't forget, with your new Volvo, you got 'Towing' for life.

yaromac 09-17-2021 01:15 AM

Same issues here -- assured the car had CarPlay and after paying for it, while being shown round the vehicle told casually it wasn't working yet but would be delivered in an update soon -- trying now to find is it written in the specs that it has CarPlay or was the dealer just saying that to get the sale? Also red hot iPhone after wireless charging... Also maps turning off for no reason in the middle of a commute. Phone unpairs itself for no reason.

yaromac 09-17-2021 06:14 PM

Anyone have any updated info on CarPlay?

Cruiter 09-18-2021 02:52 PM

Spoke today with a service rep and got this info

Although today started bad with a left rear tire that picked up a very large nail, it turned out with a smile and good feelings re: my Volvo service department. I was ready to go to COSTCO to get a quick patch and fix, I knew the location of the nail and it was likely a place to safely patch but as I was driving that way I realized the closest Volvo dealer was only a quarter mile off my route so...... He looked at it and said "no problem, give me 30 min or so" (I could feel the tension in my day relaxing). In about 20 min he came back with the key and said I was good to go. Volvo covered the flat and I was near doing a dance.

Anyway down to the point of this thread and the problems. The rep said when I asked he had time to answer a few questions so I related much of what I've read on here RE: the '22 models w/Google and much of it not working on delivery. He was aware of that issue in that they have already finished the 'PDI' on many cars already bought elsewhere. He said that for some years back, all the cars received from the factory had to be placed on a rack and plugged into the server for connections to be finished but most of the PDI could be completed while it was on the rack. But some of the new '22 models w/Google and other new features could take up to an hour or more for that to finish and if it was disconnected prior to finishing, it would have to start all over. I've not personally driven a '22 or played with the system but he said the technology was great (he actually said 'Solid) and worked well once properly set up. Then the sales person on delivery should spend up to an hour if necessary going over every aspect of it to make sure the customer is as comfortable as possible. I'm pretty tech savvy myself but there is still some stuff I could have trouble with if I wasn't properly 'Indoctrinated' as Volvo doesn't pretend to work just like every other car were used to. I told him some folk on this forum had successfully tried a factory re-set and he acknowledge that could go far to getting much of the initial download completed. But he wouldn't recommend 'Doing or not Doing' that as a customer so it's just up to you.

That said, you can feel good about your purchase. If you don't want to go to your original dealer to get the work done, feel free to use any other one. The one that patched my tire for free today was not the dealer I purchased from.
Hope this info helps someone. And if you feel your car didn't get a proper PDI (Pre Delivery Inspection and Service), you can go back to where you got it or any other you can travel too. It may or may not be an appointment situation, just depends on their load at the time.

thank you for your advice! I talked to sales person. They could check the car the next day and it turned out that “emission system fault” was a software issue. So they update the software. It was about a week ago.
today I have this

It’s a shame they changed the 2022’s. I purchased the 2021 XC 60 T8 last September. I have 16k miles on it and have had no issues. The wireless phone charger doesn’t work well with the iPhone 12 but I can live it that.

Can't agree more... Sorry, really for Volvo. And to me it isn't just the problems which could very well be teething problems. It is the very concept and design that I see under the hood from a technology perspective which gives me goose bumps. It would take a pretty sum of money for Volvo to pay me to drive a car like this. There is just no chance I would buy one. I am not sure which part of it is solid. I am certain the spyware code is but everything else? When I look at the brands which opted for this type of approach, none of them are in the luxury segment. Even Kia didn't dare to go this far down the toilet. Essentially what is happening is very similar to what has happened in the smarthome business:
Companies like Google start to take over the software, offering a free platform and gradually and increasingly making a lot of very basic functionality unnecessarily dependent on their cloud services under the cover of "improved services". While they are doing it, some are happily collecting your personal data, profiling you and reselling that data. Initially for targetted advertising purpose, but who knows. Some care some don't. The next step is to make the functionality so dependent on their services that they will potentially want you to pay for a subscription service... This is a business alternative to collecting data since the servers need to be maintained. Some companies will do both... collect and sell your data while collecting a subscription fee from you.
What is more problematic is that these simple functionalities are also becoming extremely unreliable because they are dependent on more and more hardware and software which can break and will break. Because they are exposed to the internet, they require constant maintenance and patching (upgrades) to remain secure. The constant upgrades occasionally break things. This is how... these days, the Volvo requires an internet connection in the US to have traffic information for the navigation for example. My 10 year old BMWs relied on RDS, (FM radio) so no need for internet connection. Now and new for 2022, the car uses Google map which even requires internet for mapping and routing. If you are out of cellular reach, or the Google server is down, or your software version is out of date, you may be out of luck unless you downloaded the maps which would then offer partial functionality. This is outright stupid. The old car navigation systems were much smarter. They had all the POIs and maps always available and would continue to work without cell connection or satellite coverage in tunnels and underground parking structures because the navigation was connected to the car orientation/compass, wheel turn angle and speed and could close the gaps of coverage. This is just one example but the entire Android idea goes much deeper. It controls the climate and a large number of other things in the car. Imagine the same problems with unlocking or starting the car... That's exactly what is happening right now with the MyQ garage door openers... if their server or your internet connection is down or you didn't update your app, it stops working. There is zero chance this '22 car can ever be as reliable as the previous years and it is by design.

I hope I didn’t make a mistake buying this car.

anna-ru,

We just bought a new 2022 XC60 B5 about 3 weeks ago. The map on the console and the switch to turn on wireless charging did not work. The dealer did a reset and that was fixed. You can do this yourself if needed.

At about 500 miles, we were driving on the freeway and the check engine / emissions light came on. We took it to the dealer the next day and after opening a tech case with Volvo and checking for leaks etc., Volvo determined that the O2 sensor needed to be replaced with an updated version. About 2 weeks later no issues as of yet. Great car overall!! Sometimes there are some speed bumps with a brand new model. Hope that helps!

Thanks for the update, good example of what a warranty is for. It's a shame some who do not own the car want to shamelessly write about everything that 'might' be wrong but they need to feel important so..... Like I said in a previous post above, the service department I was in for my flat had already set up several cars bought from other dealers that didn't completely prep (PDI) their car prior to delivery. Glad yours is 'now' giving you what it should.

Rain is finally starting to leave the area here so after a week of 'soggy', it's time for a car wash.

Not to hijack the thread, but there is a software fix for the iPhone 12. Did it to our 2021 T8 and it works OK.

How can I do that? The map and main screen sometimes turns off while driving, hopefully reset would help.

Volvo is a great car, I agree. My previous car was 2015 nissan rogue so 2022 Volvo now is like a spaceship for me.
I just wish this Android system worked better.

For a reset:

There’s a wheelie at the bottom right corner of your display, that’s Settings.

Scroll down to System.

You’ll see Reset Options. Personally, I did both the factory reset and network reset.

Also check under Software update, too, just in case. It’ll tell you if you need an update.
I turned on the toggle for “automatic software download.”

For anyone looking, the XC60 is a fantastic car. Someone else noted that the only reason people post is because they’re having problems (I confess I did initially) but this forum has been incredibly helpful.

I have 2 vertebrae that are almost bone on bone, and I don’t get sore in this car, not even after 3-4 hours.
The interior is incredibly quiet and comfortable on the interstate roads, some of which need resurfacing here
(I have a ‘22 loaded Momentum B5, it drives like a dream). I’m an account manager covering 3 metros/states and I don’t regret this purchase at all! Love this car. It’s a sweet ride, my husband is jealous. Yes, right now it’s a quirky interface. But run your apps (SiriusXM, Spotify, etc) off your iphone on Bluetooth, you’ll have a great experience.

Good luck and let us know if the resets help.

p.s. I couldn’t get an appointment for 2 weeks when I called the dealer, and I just drove it in to the closest one. They looked at it right away. The schedulers are probably trained to stave off drive-ins?

Thanks for posting! I have had nothing but problems with my 2022 as well. I am at my.

Regards,

I have all the same issues. I feel like the dealer is minimizing the issues. I have had the car a month and it’s been in the dealer more days than at home. The manufacturer is not taking responsibility.

Just noticed an update to the Google OS in the owner's manual. It speaks of version 1.7, which should be rolling out soon. Included in this update include SiriusXM and a bunch of other functionality. Stay tuned. I'll give an update once it downloads.

Same here. I live in Sweden and no support from Volvo and the list keeps growing. It truly is the worst car I've ever had.

3 months in now and the following:

TPMS random errors.
No Radio, all DAB apps just say "Loading...."
Bluetooth issues. Can make call but no sound through speakers
Rear sensor for opening boot never worked.
Volvo on call. Remote Heating dosent work. Remote starting sometimes works. No other features such as driving journal etc available on new model.
Google maps crashing during driving.

The now the worst one and most recent.....
This automatic braking when reversing just kicks in for no reason. Had to disable that. Nearly took the head of my kids.

OMG, so sorry you 2022 folk are having to deal with this, it's starting to become pretty clear the pie wasn't fully baked. RE: your most recent issue with the automatic brakes. When I took delivery of my 2021, my sales guy who was pretty good on the tech side showed me all the settings and recommended a few settings from information his customers relayed to him. On mine if I remember correctly there is a city settings for the emergency braking with three levels. He suggested the least sensitive setting and that one still keeps me from backing into someone even if they're walking three car links away. I think it was in the master settings but your 2022 manual would be the place to look. I hope that can be of 'some' help. Best luck going on. I'm sure they will get all this fixed, sadly they took the pie out of the oven too soon.

they did. The actually just updated the system. I was told it wasn’t a technical issue, just an android glitch

anna-ru 10-25-2021 01:25 PM

Anybody else got a quality survey from Volvo? They asked lot of questions in there.
I expressed all my concers and problems with glitchy android system, google maps, no remote start, no apple carplay

etc.
hope they’ll read it.

My first post here and I want to share my experience with my XC60. Even though mine is European model with a diesel engine Android Automotive is the same. I got my car in the middle of July and so far I put about 8 000 miles on it. It is very reliable car engine wise and mpg is great thanks to diesel engine. Now about the problem child: Volvo really rushed this system and left a lot of options to be added later. I didn't have any major issues with the system except once that it was completely frozen and I could not control a/c or anything else. Simple shut down of the engine, lock and unlock of the doors and starting again fixed the problem. My car doesn't;t have a built-in data modem so I have to use Bluetooth tethering. This slows down android whenever there is a disconnect between the phone and the car. SOmetimes it takes a couple of minutes for google maps to start getting real traffic data or they just freeze until I establish a data connection. Spotify sometimes gets frozen and the only fix is to go and force close it in the settings/apps.
I am super happy with the car and this is not the first time that I get an unfinished product. The last one was my cell phone that was supposed to have dual SIM functionality working but the software was updated a year later to enable that feature. I am now super happy with the phone.
I feel the same for Volvo. In a year we will get a lot of new features and all the bugs will be fixed. This is the price that we pay for having the latest and greatest. I am patient and looking forward to new updates. I hope they give us Waze or at least Android Auto that I can run Waze of.

xc60 2022

I got my new xc60 2022 2 months ago for my "60" birthday, but what a disappointment. Like many of you the radio was not working, unable to connect my iPhone, my key doesn't work properly so the car doesn't lock, cant open the hatch and a check engine light came on. But the worse part is that it took 3 weeks to get a service appointment. I am ready to trade this car is not worth my time and frustrations.
