Default 1999 V70 xc throttle body and smell questions

Hello all,

I am now the proud owner of a 1999 V70 XC. The car is awesome, makes me wish I had been driving volvos all these years. The problems I have with it currently: The ETS light is on, I understand that I can give the throttle body a cleaning and that should take care of the problem. I am wondering if anyone has posted pics on where the throttle body is and how to clean it. I saw the forum for the 850, will that be the same as my car? Also, there is a smell coming into the vehicle from the engine, it smells like either coolent or possible power steering fluid, has anyone else had that problem? And finally, being new to volvos, is it normal for there to be white smoke coming out of the exhaust?, it isn't a huge amount, but enough of it to make me wonder, seems to have a bit of a smell as well. Any input, suggestions, etc. is much appreciated.

Thank you all,
David

Hi David, except for the ETS light, the other mentioned problems seem familiar, did you get any further with these? (also owner of 1999 V70 XC)

Tnx marcel

Yep, the coolant smell was/is from the heater core. Its such a small leak that I have yet to fix it. I believe that its just the o-rings and hope to replace them as soon as I have some time. I did end up having a major power steering fluid leak ( that is common with these cars ). I ordered a rebuilt rack and pinion for around 150, if I remember correctly, and got it installed for another 300 or so. This was all a long time ago. I wish I had more info to share with you.

Oh yea, I also replaced the radiator and did some other maintenance to it, flame trap , Pcv valve etc. Again, its been a while.

Ha David, tnx for the info! So far the explanation I got was that the 'burnt oil' smell through the vents is most probably from a leak in the turbo-pipes under pressure from high speed - according to the mechanic! -. Once again thanks for the reply, all the best, marcel
