Default 2001 XC70 died on highway

I was just thinking how much I liked my XC70 while driving home and it responded with the engine quitting at 70mph. I coasted to the shoulder and tried restarting several times every 5 minutes for the next half hour. There was a lot of highway noise but I couldn't hear the fuel pump come on when I switched on to start like it normally does. I had to be towed home. After the car was unloaded it started! Tow driver said it's not uncommon for that to happen if there was a blockage in the fuel tank. Did the jostling ride home clear the problem? I'm afraid to trust it now. Any troubleshooting suggestions? Thanks - BTW, where was the "limp home" mode when I needed it?

Maybe the fuel pump overheated and shut down then on the ride home it cooled and that's why it started.

Have you had the ETM changed or is it still the original? Ours did the same thing when the ETM went out

I don't know what the ETM is (exhaust temperature monitor?) but we bought the car used a year ago and I don't know if it was ever replaced. The dealer did replace the fuel quantity sending unit in the tank because the gauge didn't work. I hope there is a fault code in the computer that identifies the problem when I take it to the Volvo dealer. The fuel gauge was low when it happened but not in the red zone. I just drove it about 4 miles to the gas station and back with no problem but I won't trust it on a trip until the Volvo shop looks at it. Thanks for the replies!

The ETM is the electronic throttle module. (Throttle body)

Also keep in mind the ETM warranty has been extended to 10 years and 200,000 miles. To trigger free replacement certain codes have to come up.

I'm not sure if your symptoms are an ETM issue.
