Default '98 V70 XC "Opportunities..."

Greetings, all!

I've got a '98 XC with a mere 231,000 miles on the clock. I bouth the car three years ago (w/105K on the meter...) and have driven it quite a bit, as my weekly commute runs about 1,250 miles..

I've got a couple of issues that I could use some help on...
1. Just flunked the emissions test here in Wisconsin...or, more accurately, I failed the computer test, as they never bothered to test the exhaust gases. OBD II codes indicated both front and rear O2 Sensors. The dealer said both units are working properly when the vehicle is under load, but that the signal drops to zero at idle.

How much of a p.i.y.a. is it to change out these sensors? I don't mind monkeying around a bit, but I don't want to mess with dropping exhaust manifolds etc to plumb the sensors in. Any/all advise is appreciated in this regard.

A couple of other points to note:
1. I've had the dreaded "bevel gear" failure...twice. The first time, I replaced the gear etc 'cause I originally bought the car for my (then 16 year old) daughter and wanted her to have an AWD vehicle to drive during the winter months. The second time, I simply removed the front-to-rear drive shaft and VOILA, a FWD Volvo wagon.
2. In between bevel gear #1 and #2 failures, the driveshaft bearing crapped out...wish I'd thought to remove the shaft then, as I could have saved myself a bunch of $. Oh, well...
3. As you can see, I do "lots and lots" of highway driving...and truly believe the Volvo seats are the most comfortable seats I've ever ridden on. The Drivers Side seat heater has stopped working, although the passenger side still functions properly. Not a big deal, but a "nice-to-have" between October and March around these parts...
4. I've found that 89 octane produces better mileage than 87 octane for this engine/vehicle. Well worth the $.07 - $.10 premium per gallon. I'm averaging 24.7 MPG at 70+ MPH highway speeds.

All for now. Thanks to any/all for the guidance on the O2 sensors...as I have to act soon, as my registration is now expired and I'm now a "target" for the State Police.

Regards!
