I've got a 1999 V70 XC that Volvo Increased Protection extended warranty is putting a new (rebuilt) engine into. I would like to know what break in would be best. Here's my challenge: The car broke down on vacation 750 miles from home. I left it behind and am now flying back to claim it from the dealer, who is just getting done putting in the rebuild. I will be covering the drive in 2 days. The answer I got from the dealer doing the repair is "just drive". The answer I got from my dealer at home was do "30 miles of stop and go" then get on the highway but vary your speed. I've been researching this a little, but I would like some Volvo specific advice.

Also, what should I ask my dealer service peopleat home to do (besides an oil change) in terms of checking the engine when I get back. Again, I've done a little research but none of the advice is specific to Volvos.

 

In the 'old days' you broke in an engine. Today's autos are different and the break in schedule of old is not adhered to. It stands to reason that you would not over rev the engine or exceed the 70 MPH speed limit. I would, when you return home, replace the oil and filter. I am a huge fan of synthetic oil and have used it since the 70's exclusively.
