A stranger hit a curb and got stuck in a snowstorm in his 2001, I believe, XC70, outside our house. I went to investigate and he couldn't get the transmission to work. He could shift into the different gears (automatic), including reverse, but the car would not move. So, I'm guessing the transmission is not engaging somehow.

Any specific culprits?

 

Did yo.u happen to notice if the speedo was moving?
Maybe the axle broke or came apart

 

Tech, I forgot to ask the guy to press on the accelerator to let me know if the engine was revving. If it wasn't, then my guess would've been the throttle linkage. Anyway, he got towed.
