Default how do you inspect the bevel gear?

I can do most of the routine maintenance; but I wonder what is entailed inspecting the bevel gear on my 2008 XC70?

Just really checking the level of fluid in it, more than likely it is full, but watch for leaks. Is this AWD?

Hmmm. For the power steering fluid, for example they tell you to "check/adjust fluid level".

For this item VOLVO has specified: "Bevel gear, visual inspection" which does not suggest that fluid level is the focus. My XC90 (67,500 miles) has some "noise" from the front, and I am looking for possibilities, and this items is very specific on the maintenance list. I can't find any information on this, can anybody help?

If it isn't leaking, the fluid is not checked. If it is leaking, it needs to be repaired.

No leaks.

Does anybody know where I can find Volvo's procedure for "Bevel gear, visual inspection"?

You just did it. A visual inspection is exactly what it says.

ES6T I can't tell if you are:

-- equally exasperated by the lack of information available
or
-- trying to aggravate a forum member

But in either case it looks like I'd better find a different forum. If anyone has recommendations for a better volvo forum please reply.

I don't know what kind of information you are looking for. Its a visual inspection. That means you look at it. That's it. There is nothing else to it. You said yours is not leaking. So I assume in order for you to know that, you looked at it. Visual inspection complete.

"Bevel gear, visual inspection" should be written "Rear bevel gear case, check for leaks".

========= CLARIFIED ===========

Sorry ES6T but your answer seems like it was just trying to confuse by sending me in circles. People do that on forums and it's disappointing because it makes people hate forums, and simply not return.

So I called the Volvo dealer and he was kind enough to clarify the issue, much appreciated as I hoped the internet could have done that. Tech said that the word "inspection" is confusing and generates a lot of calls. He said:
"Bevel gear, visual inspection" actually means "Rear bevel gear case, check for leaks".

This Volvo world is a different world than I am accustomed to.

Whatever you say. Its pretty straightforward.

And that's what I said initially when I said you check for leaks and that's it.

XCfella, the bevel gear is just like a differential in the XCs AWD set up. They are filled with gear oil similar to a differential and there are seals around each of the shafts that can wear with time. As with any transmission or differential, the guidance is to just look to see if there's any wetness or grease/caked dirt around any of the drive or prop shafts which indicates a seal should be replaced. Other than that, there's no service interval for the gear oil.

Thought I found something to dig into but "take a looky" is a lower level of inspection than I expected from a service line item.
Thanks for the clarification. The internet is pretty dang useful when someone who knows what they're talking about is willing to write it down for all to access (& find by google).

As I wrote I'm trying to find the source of a gear or bearing noise up front. This car has so much more road noise than my Ford pickup, that doesn't seen right. It does not seem to change turning left or right, it's constant.
