Default Keyless Remote
Is it absolutely necessary to go to a dealer to have a remote keyless entry programmed? I live about 40 miles from the nearest dealer and my schedule dosen't allow me to get to them before they close

Yes it is.
Unless you have an indipendant shop near you that has all the Volvo special tools to program the remote.
