looking for advice on 98 xc70
Hi everyone...While I am proud to own an 89 240DL wagon with only 150k miles on the clock ...I am nevertheless attracted to the xc70's...but since i consider myself a Volvo purist..I
refuse to buy any "Volvo"after 1998... So my questions pertain to the 98 xc70.I was wondering if anyone could tell me if the xc70 is as good and reliable as earlier Volvos???Are there problems with the AWD after 100k miles??Compared to later years of the xc70 how does the 98
model rate in terms of performance, reliability, and generally free from defects????I have read some woeful tales on this site abt how the later models really miss the mark in terms of dependability and the lack of Quality because the later models are really made by FORD... A sad day in Volvo history(IMO).Any and all comments are welcome and appreciated. BNE

The main thing that goes bad is the Driveshaft. Tp replace is ATLEAST $1200.00.
IMO if I had one and the driveshaft went bad I would take it out and throw it away.
The AWD stops working at 30MPH anyway.

I'm not sure what u mean you would throw away the whole car or just the driveshaft????I am surprised abt the AWD system ....I had a Subaru Outback and it's AWD was just fantastic.. I guess I will stay with the 240's...I thought that if Volvo made the 98 xc70 it would be good ...hmmmm I hope other ppl add their 2 cents to this thread ...Thanks for the input Tech.

Jay, sorry to hear your experience has not been a good one...with the xc70...I appreciate your advice.....perhaps I will look into the 740's and 940's instead.Thanks..BNE
The regular v70 without awd?? is that front or rear wheel drive?what years were they made?do they have Volvo's reliability????I might be interested in one...Thanks f/t info. Tech....BNE
The regular V70 is front wheel drive.
The best one for the V70 is the 1998. In 1999 they fell off the reliability scale.
They had minor bugs but overall a good car.
The 1998 V70 is a made over 850.

i am very much interested in the 98 v70 GLT AWD Turbo wagon...i am curious and would like to know the nature of this driveshaft problem and how prevalent is it in this model line???what are the underlying causes for the problems....if as u said earlier u would just throw away the driveshaft... is the replacement any better to remdiate the problem for good or is it just the nature of this design? BNE
The replacement isn't any better.
Also with AWD cars you need to keep tires rotated good. They all need to stay the same tread Depth or it will burn up the AWD unit.

This is very interesting...so I would problably be better off with the front wheel drive model and stay away from awd Volvos...Thanks Tech....BNE
