Default New Alternator and CEM

My '02 V70 XC gave an "Over Voltage" warning, then a "Low Voltage" warning, then died. I replaced the battery and it ran fine for a few miles, then the "low voltage" message came on again. Was able to get it to the indie Volvo shop in town. New alternator right? Not according to the mechanic.

He says that the alternator started producing A/C current and fried the CEM, meaning that both need to be replaced to the tune of $1800 total.

Does this sound right? Among the myriad Volvo electrical problems documented online, I can't find this one.

Ideas?

hmm... hard to say...

I would say check the regulator on the alternator to see if it is the old style, but he could be right. you never know.

If it does need replaced then the pricing sounds right.Odd thing is,I carry that Specific CEM in STOCK.And the alternator "could" have cooked it "if" its sending an A/C current.I would say that it is most likely burnt and needs replaced.

I have seen that you can attempt to reset the CEM by "disconnecting the battery cables and touching them together for more than 15 minutes." True?

Default Danger?

Is there any danger in attempting this before making the repair? Would it wipe out software/updates, etc?
