Noob Trailer question (pictures included)
Hey all!
I recently started a business that requires me to tow around a small trailer with some light gear in it. I originally was going to throw everything in the back of my wagon, but in order to do that I would have to constantly push the passenger seat and driver seat almost all the way forward. My business partner and I opted to buy a trailer as my xc70 (2002) already had an existing uhaul hitch on it. The problem is, I don't see any existing wiring hanging down near the hitch. I opened up trunk near the spare and I see what I assume is the hookup for the hitch (picture included). Please enlighten me as to whether or not this is indeed a trailer harness.
Now how do I get this to hook up to a six pin hook up? Is there a wiring harness that I can buy online somewhere or am I going to have to go through volvo?
As a side note, and this may be a dumb question, but seeing as how I have never worked with a trailer before, how can I tell if my trailer has any sort of brakes? I looked near the tires and I don't see anything that would indicate a braking mechanism, but I'm not 100% sure what electronic brakes mean.
**edit** Disregard the portion about trailer brakes. I looked at the wiring configuration on the trailer and while the plug is a six pin, it looks like the blue wire (brake wire) is not connected to anything so it leads me to believe that my trailer is brake less and that they just chose to use a six pin connector for no apparent reason.
Anyone have any advice for me? I would certainly appreciate it.

You still may have surge brakes, does the coupling look like it has cables or hydraulic hoses near it?
As for your trailer plug, you could go with something like this:
Towing hook 4-pol appl for 2002 Volvo XC70 (30744327)
I found new vehicles a bit hit and miss with regards splicing into the rear harness, some would set off codes, some not. For the price of a plug and play harness, not worth the risk.

Look for brake drums behind the wheels.
U haul also has a powered U-Haul: Search results for 13493 unit that requires splicing into the harness and requires a 4-to-7 adapter U-Haul: Moving supplies: Trailer-Wiring Adapters (not positive about the adapter) for about 1/2 the cost; similar to etrailer.com. Then add install time.
Check with the Volvo dealer to compare pricing.
Plug and play is great too.
