Well had mechanics do all seals and timing belt,water pump and tensioner. Small drip off front seal. Made them get new seal from Volvo dealer, same drip. All else no leak seals are good . Do I worry about this ? Pour in miracle goo? This mechanic already paid . Car runs like a top . This 12 month 12,00 mile means nothing now. Mecanic thinks replacing cams will do. SSishh

 

Is it on a cam with CVVT? Is the PCV working properly?

 

No it is the front cam seal only . The contend that they checked the pvc and the cvvt seal is also been replaced

 

Right, but does the camshaft that has the leaking front cam seal have CVVT? If so, I have seen some that have excessive movement in/out which can leak

 

Afraid I am not comprehending what CVVT is then. There isn't any in/out movement on the gear when touched with engine off. Visually when running the belt all looks to be strictly spinning with no verticle or in out movement.

 

What year is your XC70? The CVVT actuator is essentially the cam pulley. It changes timing using oil pressure controlled by the solenoid on top of the head. You can't check for in and out movement with the timing belt on. But when they wear out, the movement is excessive which can wear out the seal.

 

Thank you for the information. It is a 2002 , with 189000 miles. I left this to the mechanics feeling it was in better hands. Only seen with old belt on and after with new. Because they have replace this seal twice I would expect their testing of any in out movement. The engine runs exceedingly smooth. I will probably pick up today and add some blue devil oil leak stop to engine. Beyond monitoring the oil levels this drip is barely possible to see with cover off and engine running. From what I have read on this forum it might be a seating issue of the seal or PCV blockage. Either way till I find another mechanic, money or learn some more myself my driveway will be as good a place to sit rather than a mechanics lot.

 

The small drip from the cam seal was possibly not the oil spilling culprit. My x/c 70 is now sitting in my drive after a mile and a half drive home from the mechanic. Inside warning light to pull over safely- no oil pressure. I poured blue devil oil stop in the crankcase before driving home. I now have no oil touching the dip stick. Engine was still running smooth although elevated engine heat when I turned off.
When idling with tbelt cover off , such a small drip drip drip. Could a split or rupture in the PCV return line swell open when in acceleration? I won't pay to replace the engine , this occurred too quickly no leaky build up.
Any ideas...Will
