two questions on 98 xc70
hello all. newbie...obviously.
i tried to search with no luck
. here's my probs:
1. the front passenger door lock won't engage. the indicator (?) goes up and down with the fob and central and on the door itself. here's the thing. if you "lock" the door with any of the methods, somebody can open it from the outside. what's the deal?
2. there is a vibration/hum on the car between 64mph and 70 mph. before and after that range there is nothing noticable. new tires didn't help, balance, rotate allignment on new and old tires didn't help, brake rotor turn and new pads didn't help either. it's not in the tranny or engine since it's still there when i put the car in neutral at spped. tire dealer said rim not bent. could it be something in the awd system?
any assistance is appreciated in advance.

#1 sounds lik a lock module to me, I've replaced about 4 on my Chrysler Mini-Van. They lock automaticly at about 15 MPH and thats just alot of cycles. #2 I passed up a v70 AWD that had a similar feel to it. Since I've been on the Forum, I've learned that 98 was the first year of the AWD and there was a few "quircks" with them. One post I read dealt with the same issue and the guy went so far as to take his drive shaft off. According to him that solved his problem. All he had to do then was have his driveshaft balanced and he was back in business. But if yours still does it when you put it in neutral ??? Hope you like your 98, I have been hearing it is the last "true" Volvo before Ford got involved.
1. The door lock assembly is bad.
2. It could be the driveshaft or a bad front wheel bearing.
If possible remove the driveshaft and drive the car and see if it is still there.

Thanks for the input.
How difficult is it to remove the drive shaft?
How much would you estimate it would cost to repair/replace the drive shaft and wheel bearing? The car has 119K miles on it. I saw that another post said the wheel bearing is around $375.

I've only pulled a few driveshafts but it shouldn't be too bad. Just make sure you mark where the joint/flange bolts together with a marker or my favorite, my daughters old nail polish. To have it balanced by a reputable shop, 50 bucks or so. As for the wheel bearing, its just a matter of logging on to one of the sponsor sites or recomended sites from some of the other members. 375 huh. Thats alot of coin. Good luck.
The drive shaft isn't all that bad to remove. But it is like $1000.00 to have replaced.
$375.00 sounds about right like around $150.00 for the bearing and the rest labor. Im not 100% sure about the price but sounds about right though.
