Order a Valet key from the dealer using the VIN number. That's a single rubber or plastic handled key with no remote. Those cars came with a "switchblade" key and remote combination. I have heard those can cost $650 for a key and remote combo. You don't even know if the car will run or what's wrong with it - take the cheapest way out first, you can always get (and have programmed) a remote later. The key will come precut, and if there's an error in the cut - you won't have to pay for it. That will let you unlock the steering column and turn the ignition on. The car will not start until the CEM (central electric module) is programmed to accept the signal from the chip in the new key.

That requires a download using a VIDA subscription. Using a compatible DICE unit with the appropriate CPU and VIDA subscription anyone can do that download. If you don't know Volvos I would not suggest a newbee try that process. So the next step will be to tow the car to a dealer or Volvo specialist with a VIDA subscription to have the car programmed to the key. The key and the car have to be next to a VIDA machine at the same time to be able to do this.

After you get the key (or actually before also) Test the battery - unless you want the first call from the dealer to be - "Sir, you need a new battery to start with, that will be $$$$"

Good luck
