Default 2004 XC90 2.5 Fuel pressure regulator

So my Volvo died on the side of the road. It has been hard starting, so I assumed that either the fuel pump or the fuel pressure regulator was starting to go bad. Got it back to the house and pressed the schrader valve and very little fuel spurted out. So I decided to change the fuel pressure regulator first.

I can't find it. Did some searching on the various forums and found out that some 2004s didn't have one. So my question is, what regulates the fuel pressure in one of these? And should I just go ahead and assume that I need to change the fuel pump?

Thanks for your time in helping me.

I find using the diagrams on dealer parts web sites useful for these kinds of questions. Check out: https://parts.volvocarsannapolis.com.../30611539.html to find the pressure sensor.

I had intermittent stalling, stuttering, fuel starvation issues on my 2005 2.5T. Fuel pressure gauge showed pressure all over the place. I ended up having to replace the Fuel Control Unit / Pump Electronic Module.

Here's a writeup I did about the whole fiasco.
