Default 2004 XC90 HID problems

My driver's side HID control Mod just went out. The dealer wanted to replace the entire headlight assembly for $900. I decided to buy a new pair of headlights (halogen)from Amazon for $220 (for the pair). The lights look and work great, except for the "bulb failure" message that the dealer has no idea how to clear. They said if I don't replace the HID headlight unit with another one the message will remain. Does anyone know more about this issue?

Thank you

Pmedhat,
Sorry, have not had anything like what you have described happen to the HID's on our '04 XC90. Just one burned out bulb in 7+ years. Of note, our daily operating mode is to have the main-lights always selected on the light switch, so very rarely are we using the daytime running lights.

Hey pmedhat, I was wondering if you ever found a solution to this. I converted my HID to regular halogen this past week and the "Headlamp Failure" message is driving me crazy. Also, when you converted, what did you do with the wire that went to the vacuum casing (that adjusted the headlight position)?

When I found out the cost of replacing the HID bulbs I considered switching to halogen. A local mechanic that I trust, who once worked for a Volvo dealer told me that the Headlamp Failure light will only go away if you replace the ECU with one from a halogen equipped car. The cost of that makes it out of he question. I don't like the HID's, but I'm sticking with them for now. Of course you could completely disable the warning messages, but I wouldn't recommend that.

Ouch. Well, it looks like I will just be getting used to that d*** thing. Thank for the info!

Default HID Problems Over

My wife totaled our 2004 XC70 and the replacement 2005 XC70 has Halogen lights, so the HID problem is moot. I now have for sale 1 HID ballast (used) and 3 D2R Xenon bulbs (new).

Default 2005 XX90 HID Headlight Assembly Problem

I'm having issues with the drivers side headlight assembly on my 2005 XC90. I have replaced the bulb and ballast, but the outer housing of the assembly is cracked and moisture gets in and shorts the headlight. I'd like to know if it's possible to just buy new halogen assemblies for both sides and get rid of the HID all together.

Default 2005 XX90 HID Headlight Assembly Problem

You can swap out the HID's for halogen, but you will have an error message on the display for all of eternity. My understanding is that this is nor fixable, unless you disable the display. Believe me I was tempted to go that route until the car was totaled. We have halogens now and I'm much happier.

Aftermarket HID's are available, but pricey.

I'm not sure how old your message is, but I'm trying to find out if I can simply swap out the HID headlight assembly on my 05 XC90 for halogen assemblies. I don't want to have to pay for the HID anymore

Thanks. I've seen the aftermarket halogen assemblies online, do they just plug right in to the existing plug for the HID assembly?

Default XC90 Xenon Replacement w/ Halogen Assemblies

I'm having issues with my Xenons going out (permanently) on my 2003 XC90. I'm told that I need new assemblies ($3,500) and will be attempting to switch to halogen in a DIY project over the coming week ($243 for pair of halogen assemblies on Amazon). Anyone aware of what I can remove, will need aside from the halogen assemblies? I know it can be done (with permanent error messages), but not sure of what to look out for.

Any help appreciated! Thank you
