2005 XC90 Manual Shift mode adjustment

My shift lever is somewhat loose, and wobbles easily. In "auto" mode, everything works fine.
In "manual" shift mode, the transmission will up-shift with the "VERY SLIGHTEST" pressure forward. In fact, just touching the shift lever will cause the shift up.
Conversely, pulling the lever back for a downshift won't work with normal pressure. You have to "slam" it back to get it to work.
'Sounds like something is "out of place" and needs to be adjusted.
Before I start tearing things apart to see what's wrong, 'thought I'd "throw it out there" to see if anyone has seen the problem, and has a solution...... Thanks.... Mike K.
