Default 2006 XC90 - Bluetooth won't pair

I just purchased a used 2006 XC90. The bluetooth system will only sporadically hear me after I press the main button and hear, "Setup Menu." I finally got it to execute a remove all phones command. When I issue an "Pair Phone" command, after very numerous attempts it will finally start the pairing process and and instruct me to enter the 1234 code. But on my phone (iPhone Xs Max running iOS 13.2) when I tap on the Volvo for Life option, when the keypad comes up I instantly hear "Pairing Failed" before I have any opportunity to enter a single digit.

Any guidance would be appreciated.

Did you try restarting your phone and the car's Bluetooth system?

Maybe, also check if there are software updates for your phone or car system. If nothing works, try resetting the car's infotainment system by disconnecting the battery for a few minutes.
