Default 2015 Volvo XC90 D5 Cold Start Issue

Hello all,

I am new to this forum so thank you for your help. I have spent hours scouring the internet for any reference to the problem and potential fixes... So far I have come up completely empty.

The issue -
Lets start by providing background. When the weather is warm (+2°C and above) no issues. When the weather is cold (-3°C or lower) no issues. However, when the weather is in that transitional temperature range (-3°C -> +2°C) and basically only when it is really damp (not after rain, but after snowfall and the air feels dense 100% humidity) the car struggles to start... This car has the keyless start and normally you just turn the "***" fully to the right until it hits the limit and then let go and the car starts right up. What is happening is that when you do this nothing happens, all the lights come on, and maybe you hear the click of the starter starting to work. Now if I turn the *** and hold it still nothing. This can go on for anywhere from 1 - 10 tries and then suddenly it just works... but only if I hold the *** fully turned to the "on/start" position. Last winter when I bought the car no issues. I did have to replace both batteries in the car in the summer (3-4 months ago) so it should no the batteries.

My best guess is it is a sensor that is getting moisture on it and causing issue... but when turning the *** to the "on/start" position it is "heating" the sensor by passing a current through it and "drying" it out... My reasoning for this idea is that the doors have sensors in them and when they get moisture on them (typically in the transitional temperature range -3°C - 0°C and when air moisture levels are high and after heavy wet snowfall followed by freezing temperatures) the doors refuse to "latch" when closing them... the solution to fix this is to heat the locking mechanism in the door with a hair dryer (one time fix) and then to apply some gun oil to the lock (gun oil is designed to remain fluid in extreme temperatures -40°C - +90°C "not accurate temperatures only example") and therefore prevents moisture from contacting the sensor and allows the doors to function normally... you do have to add oil now and then to prevent this from reoccurring.

I am hoping others have had the same problem with the cold start and have found a solution.

Thankyou for your input.
