3rd transmission

I'm an an owner of a 2004 XC90. It has 42,200 miles on it an I've just been told that it needs it's 3rd transmission. To say I'm frustrated is an understatement. At what point does Volvo admit that this car needs to be replaced? By the way, the transmission isn't the only issue with this car. It has had it's abs entire system replaced as well as the cruise control. I have two small children and I bought this car because of it's supposed reliability. The only thing that is reliable is that every 15,000 miles I will need a new transmission and be on the phone once again with roadside assistance. Any advice on how to deal with this. The dealer gave me an extended warranty ... that still doesn't give me peace of mind. So disappointed in Volvo.

Hi Mike,
Sorry about the problem, it must be annoying.
The problem is common and I personally feel those transmissions should have been recalled. I believe your XC90 came with GM-built transmission, not the one with Yamaha-built unit. I am not sure why, but the GM-built transmissions are known to fail and quite a few people seem to have been affected, as you can see in the XC90 forum; do a bit of research and you'll find a few threads related to the same issue.
If you've had enough with a Volvo (which is sad but you do have the right to be fed up with such a problem), I would give a try on Lexus next time.

My transmission also failed on my 99 S80 this past summer (which is alsoa GM transmission)at 114k miles and I ended up paying close to $4000 for a new one. But 3 transmissions failing on a car is just unacceptable. I would personally write a letter to Volvo Car Corporation of North America if I were you about your experience. I personally think that they should be recalled.
