Same situation here...but a dealer is about a 2 hour drive...can I get a part without going thro the dealer? Also, the large arm rest behind the center consul keeps slipping away from the front half...it has a broken plastic piece that keeps it clipped in place....could I just "liquid nail" it or glue it in place....or do you need to pop it out for access to something important?

ok, i just got done with replacing the part. it's a 15 minute job.
you need good lighting for this.
first look at the new part you got, you will see there is a curved c in the back, and a single screw hole (torx 15) in the front.
1) start by getting the seat as far back as you can.
2) cut the 3 ties securing the seat control cable.
3) disconnect the seat control cable from the harness (there is click button on the bottom, hold it down to release).
4) unscrew the front screw.
5) Pull the front end upward, this will "dislocate" the c arm in the back. remove the whole piece.
6) unscrew the 3 screws in the back of the seat control module, and it should slide right out.
to reassemble,
screw in the seat control module to the new part, pop the the rear c arm into the metal frame, screw in the front screw and you're done.
to volvo's credit the new part seems slightly more streamlined and seems to be half inch narrower (or maybe it's just my imagination). so hopefully it will not catch and crack as easily.

Thanks for the instructions (06-29-2011, 11:05 PM), h0td0c. They worked brilliantly.
For my 2005 XC90 (USA, silver), the new dealer part looks identical to the failed OE part, except for the embossed part number. FWIW, old # 30697086 LH and new # 31291263 LH. (LH likely equals left hand.)

This thread is fantastic, got the part from Volvo Parts | Spares | Accessories | Gifts | online ordering - Volvopartshop and with instructions from hotdoc made it very simple and quick job to do. Thanks everyone.
