Changing the Cv-joint boot
I got the cv joint boot torn off my truck and I fabricated one to keep it clean for the time being. The mechanic says he has to change the entire Cv joint and not just the boot. I think hes full of it. Anyone else had to do this?
I'm not a mechanic, but my understanding is that once the boot is torn or otherwise compromised, the timeclock is ticking on the CV joint. Any grit that gets into the joint will stick to the grease and start grinding away on the parts. If I was a mechanic, I would probably refuse to only replace the boot.
I bought a universal boot from the autoparts store, there wasn't any grit on the cv joint because like I said in the post I fabricated a temporary one. It cost me 50 bucks for the boot and 5 bucks from the cv joint grease.
keep a eye on it, i went thru three universal boots, two used axles and then finally two new axles
Thanks for that website, its got loads of stuff for my car. Your car has 150k and still running good huh. Thats great news. Mine only has 85 kilometers and this was the first problem Ive had. I live in a cobble stone colonial town that is rough on the suspension.
