We just purchased a 2007 XC90 and love it. However, after only having it for a few days we have noticed a metallic clanking sound come from rear of the car. It sound like it is coming from the rear, possible the storage area where the jack and battery are housed. If anyone has any idea what this might be, or how to fix it, I would really appreciate it. As a first time volvo owner I am hoping this is nothing serious.

 

Our 2005 XC90 was doing something similar. The parking brake had delaminated and was clanking back there - especially when we backed up. Good luck!

 

My 2003 xc90 also clanks in the rear, especially when going over speed bumps. The local dear could not fine anything wrong. I am looking for a solution too...

 

My 2009 XC90 also got the smilar clicking/clunking noise from rear of the car. Specially when we you stop the car and have the first acceleration. Not sure it is from trunk area or under the car.

 

My 2009 XC90 3.2L got the same issues especially going over bumps or uphill. Strange thing is...NOT all bumps causes this noise to occur. At first, I thought it was the muffler, then the Tailgate and my mechanic made adjustments to those part then nothing happened...The noise still exist. We changed the Shocks and Mounts and nothing happened....the noise didn't go away. I checked where the Jack is located and made sure everything is secured....the noise didn't go away.
