XC90 Rear Donging Noise at low speeds over bumps
hi can anyone tell me what the noise is at the rear left side of my xc90
its a Rear Donging Noise at low speeds over bumps my xc90 has the
nivomats
also not only does the donging noise go away at highway speeds but also
makes the noise less when the tank is full and as the fuel is used the
weight goes and the noise becomes louder and louder
is this the strut?
thanks for your time
Chris

Hi Chris,
I unfortunately don't have an answer, but I am experiencing the same noise on my front driver's side wheel area. I mainly notice this when I am on a downhill turning right going slow. It doesn't happen all the time.

I had a mechanic friend of mine look at my XC90 when this happened to me. He recommended that we change the rear struts. When we pulled the old ones off, they were actually ok but, the shock mount bushings were worn badly. This caused the threading on the strut itself to rub which we attributed to the noise. So I ordered new bushings and just for the hell of it we put the old struts back on with new bushings and the noise was gone. I order most of my parts from IPDUSA.com and can attest that these ones worked perfectly for my 03 XC90 T6.
It could be a strut issue....I am changing the front struts and rear shocks at them moment in my 2003 s60. However, I was noticing some "donging" noises from the rear of the vehicle and it turns out that the trailpipe bracket/hanger fell off the vehicle at some point and when going over bumps at slower than normal speeds, the exhaust dips down and bangs or dongs into a metal support brace that is between the two gas tank halves. A new bracket for the tail pipe might be the cause...
Did you find a fix yet?

I don't have any definitive answer, but before checking the struts, try turning off the DSTC function (long press the DSTC button below the center/radio panel for a few seconds until the light is off) and see it kills the noise.
I had a similar noise on my '05 2.5T and it turned out to be the exhaust hitting our trailer hitch. Installed some high-temp rubber between and we're golden now. Just a thought... You might give your exhaust a little wiggle when it's cool and see if you hear anything while moving it around a bit.
