Clunking noise on '04 XC90
Looks like there is a large clunking noise coming from the left side of the XC90. Usually happens when turning left but it makes the noise driving straight sometimes. Anyone have any ideas of what it could be?
I changed the brakes a few months back with aftermarket pads but didn't have any issues after they were on. Could this be the problem? It's also much colder than it used to be.
Thanks in advance.
Whoops title is wrong - should be '05 XC90

when is it happening? just low speed maneuvers such as pulling out of the garage or a parking spot?
If so i would lean toward the spring seats. a common issue in these vehicles, they tend to stress crack.
if it is the spring seat the issue will generally go away for a period of time after the vehicle has been jacked up, such as changing brakes or rotating tires.

we also have a clunking noise on our 04 xc90, you can hear and feel it on the left side I accelerate slowly. It seems as it happens when it changing gears, 1-2- and 3rd. It doesnt happen all the time, some times its louder than others. I took it to the dealer and they were like, whatever, when it gets worse bring it back. any ideas what is causing this. we just had to have a new engine put in, at 61K no less. heavy amounts of sludge, with all services done at dealer on time.

I would check the transmission mount, if you go to ipdusa.com > xc90 > transmission section > polyurethane mount > you can see what it looks like, they may even have replacement instructions on there as well. Check your motor mounts as well.
There are many causes to the clunks on the front of these vehicles, most common being the spring seats, strut bearings, and a steering input shaft. but i have known of others that have had the entire front subframe replaced, steering racks, tie rod ends, control arms, etc.
