Took my XC90 in after a relative seriously neglected oil X 1 year.
Huge clunking noise from motor area.
Garage said it needs a new motor, and that a used one is 8k+.

• Is this the only thing it could be??
• Are the rebuilt motors really 8k?

the sound is probably rod knocking and yes that is bad (means bottom end of engine is toast). get a second opinion though.

just not changing oil for a year would probably not be enough to destroy engine, unless you're driving a ton of miles, or letting the oil level get low.

I would look for an engine from a wrecked xc90 (junkyard or ebay). should be able to get one for a few thousand.

 

Second getting a second opinion!

I'd at least expect them to tear it down before stating it's a lost cause.
