Default Door Sill Rust

Hi everyone,

I'm a new happy Volvo XC90 owner. Recently bought my Volvo certified truck and I'm really happy. When I was in the purchasing process I didn't notice the small speck (approx. 1/16" - 1/8" round) of rust on the foot of the door sill near the Volvo badge.

When I went back to the dealership I told them about it expecting my wonderful paint warranty to kick in. Of course they did everything they could to blame the previous owner, sand or gravel between the door and seal rubbing...blah blah blah. Classic deflecting of blame.

I did a little searching on the net and found a couple other XC90's with the exact same problem in the exact same spot. My question is, is this a known problem with the XC90?

Although their reasoning is plausible in terms of sand or grit getting in there and rubbing, I've never had this with any other vehicle I've owned...Japanese, American (Canadian) or German made cars.

Are they just being douchey?

Thanks for your input.

I take it from the lack of responses that mine is an isolated incident?

It just seems strange to me the rust spots are happening in the one location and no where else even though my wife uses her door everyday and my kids are in and out of the back seat, always stepping on the sills.

Someone please tell me this is a non issue so that I can let it go.

Can you upload a picture?

I've been working on these a long time and rarely see rust that isn't the result of bad body work.

Here are some pics. I just received a call from my local Volvo dealership here in Canada and as I expected, they declined my claim saying that in their opinion, the paint/rust issue has come from above the paint, not from behind it.

When the dealership took some photos to submit to Volvo Canada, they also used a small hand held electronic tool that measure paint thickness or density to submit with the photos.

Looking forward to hearing you opinion.

I don't think I have ever seen rust there on any P2 platform car. Is it just one side?

Yes, it's just happening on the drivers side, no where else on the car.

Is that a good or bad thing?

Good since the cost to fix it wouldn't be too bad. But I don't know what to tell you with regard to Volvo covering it, unfortunately.
