Default Engine System Service Required - no fault code

hi
understand this is a a common query but mine is even stranger than normal! (I think)
i got the famous ‘engine system service required’ however when the mechanic ran their computer on it (engine and transmission) no fault codes came up.
also there was no associated triangle or anything else, just the message

oh and he also checked the oil level was bang on

any ideas / suggestions?

Bumping this.

Approx 2 weeks after the mechanic reset the warning it has reappeared today

when I hold down the reset button I get a 042 code.

i will take it back in as it is within warranty but was wondering if anyone has any idea of what it may be?

ive read it could be having too much engine oil? On checking the dipstick it does seem to be right on the max line..?

The Volvo systems are funny in that you can't always read the code. The 042 means nothing.

Depending upon the scan tool, you can't get a pending code so try a generic scan tool and see if you can read a code.

Update...it was the oil!

it was on the max line, needs to be at about 3/4 as many have stated here and elsewhere.
Thanks

Trust me it is

i reverted to my mechanic who specialises is volvo...that is their bag.

they have all of the dedicated equipment and know this stuff inside out. I will be shocked if it comes up again but if it does I will commit to updating the forum

I'm a dealer tech, it was not the oil.

I'd need the fault code(s) to give any sort of guess.

wait till the light come back on then try reading with a generic OBDII scanner. Better yet, go to a dealer when the lights on, many will read the code for free (done that a couple times and even had them clear the codes as they know if there's a hard fault the codes will reset).

Yes there are (or were- your "specialist" may have cleared them). A generic scanner may not read them, but whoever you took it to that misdiagnosed it as high oil should be able to read them if he has all the dedicated equipment.

Default Right on. You are correct.

You are Exactly right. My oil level prompted the same sign on message window. Oil level was high. When reduced the sign goes away. Though there could be some other scenarios too which no one has pin pointed but this is one of the reasons. Can worn plugs or any other issues cause that too only Volvo Factory Techs should be able to tell if they are honest. But that is a hard to find thing these days.
