Default firmware upgrade for towing

I am having a trailer hitch put on my 2006 XC90. They are putting a 7-pin connector. When I called a dealer they wanted an obscene amount of money and so I went with a local trailer hitch guy. We live far from a dealership anyway. My question is this... the dealership mentioned a firmware upgrade to tow (for the lights?). Is this mandatory? My trailer hitch guy never heard of such a thing. If I do have to have it done, is it expensive? Thanks for any replies.

Default Software Upgrade reqd for trailer hitch

Browsing through Volvo VIDA, I can't see any requirement for software upgrade - except for a function that relates to the rear fog light. One should think that it's possible to live without that.

Volvo's has its own wiring harness (separate from the hitch) that I would have considered over a universal aftermarket kit - as it comes with detailed instructions on exactly where to tap in to the vehicle's electric system.

I put in the OEM harness in my 2011, but it doesn't work. Do I need a dealer to activate it?
