I left my 2003 D5 XC90 parked up for a while due to working from home, with the parking brake released and the car held in position on the flat drive by the gear in park and a brick.
Now the parking brake pedal will not click down to put the parking brake on and the release handle is loose.
Could it be that the adjuster is at its maximum extension or could it be something broken in the parking brake pedal and release mechanism? The adjuster appears to be all the way out.
I have done lots of googling, but cannot find an issue where the pedal will not click down.
If the pedal is stiff - the cable/cables could have rusted if you are in a salty/corrosive area. Don't try to force it down - the parking brake will then be stuck on. If the pedal moves freely up and down, engaging the parking brake but not latching into position and the release handle is loose - there may be a problem with the little cable (#10) or how it's attached from the release handle to the foot pedal mechanism - had to fix a couple of those in the past.

Thanks the pedal is stiff, so the cable could be corroded - that diagram is just what I needed, but it appears to be missing the cable adjuster that sits along the transmission tunnel - are there different versions?
Hi Hoonk, I just wanted to come back and say thanks - I had a health issue that stopped me fixing the parking brake, but I've just been out and using the diagram I think the 10 cable is faulty as you suggested - I am going to get one ordered.
Another quick update - I just phoned my local Volvo dealer in Stockport and the price is £71+VAT for what is a 1 meter long cable! Even the parts guy was surprised. Looks like I will be going to ebay.
