We own a '04 T6 AWD with 75,600.

Today we were driving back from Sacramento to San Jose. I was doing about 70mph on the freeway and started to hit the brakes due to some stand-still traffic ahead. As I started to break I could hear heavy grinding sound from the front. Once we stopped and started moving forward (5mph) the sound continued.

I pulled over to the side and switched off the car for 10 mins. I restarted the car and started to accelerate and started to hear a whistling sound from the front.

I decided to all AAA and tow the car to Volvo dealership.

Any ideas? I know the transmission has already been replaced. AAA guy thinks it the brakes.

 

Sounds like you might have gone metal to metal on the front brakes.

Volvo identified an issue with the angle gear. There summary:

Road tested vehicle and found the road train making noise. Lifted vehicle and found the angle gear rear bearing coming apart.

This has now been replaced.
