Default Help! Broken Dipstick

So I went to check the oil on my wife's XC90 yesterday. When I pull on the dipstick the top comes off, but the metal stick stayed down in the tube. I tried grabbing it with tweezers put only managed to push it down further. Any ideas on a solution?
Thanks in advance.

Default dipstick

Really? Drop the oil pan? What about working the end of the tube loose with a small pair of vice-grips until the tube comes loose from the top of the block? Then you can easily remove the stick and replace with another.

So you gave a response without reading the problem? That's scary, dangerous and rude. Thanks for your input!

Thanks aprotec58. Just so I'm clear though. I first need to unscrew the small bolt firmly securing the dipstick tube to the block, then jiggle & pull on the tube and it will detach? Is it going to be able to just slide back into it's original position when I attempt to put it back after removing the metal part of the dipstick? I can't see where it fits into the block at it's insertion point and i didn't want to snap it off.
Thanks!

Default dipstick

To be quite honest, Freshy, I haven't actually followed the oil tube to it's ending position, however, any vehicle domestic or foriegn would end at the block just before entering the oil pan. So to answer your question, yes the tube should just easily re-install into the block., then reattach the bolt hold the tube in place.

Thanks for the help. I actually just got around to fixing it this weekend. Unscrewed the fastening bolt at the top of the dipstick oil tube and then wiggled & jiggled it back and forth and it popped right out of the housing down by the block. There was a little rubber gasket(?) that helped keep it secure in the housing, and it easily popped right back in. Took all of about 10 minutes to get the broken dipstick out and everything back together. MUCH easier than trying to blow/suck or tweeze the dipstick out! Thanks for the tip!

late to the party but your end result was correct. i would have changed the oring at the end of that tube since it tends to leak there on the volvos. less than a buck. its a easy fix. sometimes people get frustrated and push the tube in wrong and crush the o ring and it develops a leak from there.
