Default Engine oil dipstick is broken off. Is there a known method to get it out of the tube

2003 V70XC. (New to me). The engine oil dipstick handle is broken off, and the remainder of the plastic handle is down in the dipstick tube,...about 1" down with the dipstick attached. Thinking I will drill it and insert a self tapping screw into the hole to pull it out,....but I'm a little concerned about plastic bits from the drilling ending up in the oil.

I'm guessing this is not an uncommon problem, so, thought I would check here to see if there is a recognised extraction method.

Hi Brian, if you can't get it with needle nose pliers, take the tube out of the motor. It has 1 bolt that holds it in. The other end of it is out of the tube, you can push it out from there.

Saw the bolt and dipstick tube bracket, was tempted to pull it, but thought I should check here first.

I'll give it a shot.

Brian.

I pulled the tube out when I was replacing my cooling fan, was able to push the broken dipstick out. Currently covered with aluminum foil (several layers thick) wire tied on until I find time to head to the dealer to pick up the new dipstick.

Got one delivered to my door for $10.60 from an Ebay vendor. There really isn't much to a dipstick, other than making sure the new one reads the same as the old one (which I did when I swapped it). Hardly worth driving to a dealer (much less paying dealer prices for a dipstick). I'm sure the forum sponsors have other options as well (no doubt cheaper than dealer prices as well).
