I'm looking to buy a high mileage (190k miles) 2007 XC90 3.2 AWD. It looks in great condition and drives fine on a short drive.

I know the early 4 speed transmission had reliability issues, is the new 6 speed any better or worse? Are there problems with the transfercase or awd system in general?

Any advice is appreciated, as well as recommended maintenance to be done if I buy the car.

For some background, I have a 2004 S60 2.5T that I've owned for a little more than 3 years. I'm familiar with the common problems with that car, I've fixed them all I'm looking for the XC90 to last about 2 years while I pay off debt from my house remodel, then I'll get something significantly newer.

The 3.2 might have an issue with oil getting into cylinders 5&6. I'd have a Volvo tech take a look at it to see.

 

My 08 has 180k on it. At that mileage, I would be concerned as to how the fluid is in the transmission. I replaced my fluid at 173k for the first time and it was not good. I am very surprised that I wasn't seeing any issues. Other than normal wear and tear, it has held up really well. Best car I have owned and my yearly mileage is 35-40k. I have put 120k on this one in just over 3 years.
