Hi guys I really need your advice I have a 2005 Volvo XC90 V8 AWD I recently had problems with the transmission and I was able to get it replaced coasting me an arm and a leg now the car just decided to die on me I was driving home today and I stopped trying to park I put the car in Reverse but it wouldn't go back I put back on drive and it wouldn't move its like the car is not on a gear at all I turned the car off and on and I got a message saying GEAR SELECTOR SERVICE REQUIRED I opend the shifter assembly but everything seems to be in place the shifter moves and it displays on the screen the change between P R N D but when I put it on the manul it shows 1 but wouldn't shift up usually I could shift up to the 3rd gear from a full stop I was just trying to see if it works I don't know if this is related but I also changed my brake pads few days ago and the next day I got a message saying brake failure stop safely engine service required but the brakes works fine and no issues with the engine if any one had any similar issues please advice I really hope its not the transmission again

These cars are notorious for transmission problems. Sounds like the transmission might be slipping again. Could you please clarify- does the car rev up but just not move? Also if you restart it does the car move for a bit and then die out again?

Smell the dipstick to the transmission. Does it smell burnt?

Alex

The engine run perfectly but it's almost like the car is always on natural no matter what position the shifter is on the car doesn't move you could also push the car forward or backward while the shifter is on drive or reverse only the park is functioning right u can't push it and u can take the key out when the old transmission went bad it was slipping for a while on the third gear and the second but I was still able to drive it for 1200 miles from Miami to nj before I got it fixed today it didn't slip at all it just stopped working those cars don't have dipstick but there was no burnt smell

The V8 isn't nearly as prone to trans problems as the T6.

You need the codes read. That goes for any warning message.

There are codes. You're probably using a generic scanner.

If those messages were on, there were codes. Without them, you can't do much with any certainty.

If the transmission replacement was recent, it could just be a bad connector somewhere. check al of the connections to and from the transmission.
