Default Loud whiring noise and no oil pressure....

I have a 2004 XC90 with 100k on the clock. Got a whirring noise from the engine yesterday, that gets louder under higher revs. The noise is there wether I am just revving it in neutral or it is in gear. I think there is also a loss of power. I drove it for about 10 minutes like this in order to get home.

This morning I was going to drive it to the garage but after a minute the oil warning light came on with 'no oil pressure - stop etc'. So I did! It is my wifes car and she then casually mentioned it has been using alot of oil recently - turns out she has been topping it up every few days!!

Dont want to drive it to the garage incase I destroy the engine or something. Anyone had the same problem?

park it and keep it parked. it sounds like you were driving without oil its must be a gasket or the blocks cracked, pans cracked, oil pump is done or someone didnt put the oil filter in properly and its been spraying oil out. depending on how long you were driving like this sevre damage may have been done to the engine your piston rings are probably shot to ****, cylinder walls are probably warpped how you didnt seize is a suprise to me id deff get it check out.

Did you ever get your wifes Volvo sorted out and if so can you say what the fix was?
