Default New Members Area > How Many Cylinders?

When I married my wife, I gained two stepdaughters, too many dogs, and a well used 2004 AWD XC90. At 190,000 miles, maintenance needs are starting to appear. My wife had the original 2.5 replaced with a low-mileage engine about 30,000 miles ago, so I am not too worried about that. But I am preparing for suspension work, and the interior is really showing its age even though the car lives in a garage. I am accustomed to working on vintage American cars, and I spent a lot of time under the hood of German Opels back in the early eighties. This feels awkward. I didn’t realize a car existed that Haynes didn’t cover with a manual.

Hi Bronze, Welcome to the site.

Volvo's put a sticker on the front of the motor that has the engine displacement. You can also enter the VIN in the AutoCheck website and it will give you a pelim report which should include the size motor you have.

On the sticker on the front of the motor it should break down like this:

B = Where made (country)
6 = Cylinders
30 = Size
4 = Valves per cylinders

Thanks for the information. Perhaps I should have ended my title with an exclamation mark instead. I know how many cylinders the Volvo has; it just seems unnatural to have an odd number.

Blame it on Audi. I think they were the first with a 5 cylinder.

Yet another thing to blame the Germans for?

When I read up on it the design is the best for adding a little more power, smoothest fire overlap improvement and not as heavy & long as a 6. Fits better than the I6 or V6 for Fwd cars. They get a star for going with it.
