Question New volvo owner - trailer brake lights not working.

I just purchased my first Volvo, a 2007 XC90 V8. The mechanic I bought it from installed a hitch and wired into the wiring harness. On the hitch is a round connector and a flat connector. I am towing a popup camper (3500 pounds). When I plugged my camper round connector to the round connector on the hitch, the turn signals work, but not the brake lights. The guy I bought it from said something about having to buy an adapter from Autozone. I have no idea what sort of adapter I would need. Besides, why would an adapter be needed?
Something else I noticed is that the passenger side brake light on the vehicle doesn't turn on. Bulb probably burned out. I could use some guidance on how to replace the brake light bulb.
Thanks!
