Default New to Volvo, XC90 Questions

Hey all, I'm new to Volvo. I'm looking at getting between a 2007 and 2009 XC 90 for my wife. V8 or 6?

What should I look for when I look at the cars? Any known issues with engines, tranny's, transfer cases?

Any input would be appreciated.

TIA,

Jd

So are you saying that if it has an engine, I'm good?

Wow, if I'd asked this same question about a Saab on the Saab forum, I would have had half a dozen intelligent and helpful replies. Maybe the wrong Swedish car company went out of business.

It doesn't appear that the XC90 on this form is very active. Maybe you should read up on the trucks on www.Cars.com or www.SwedeSpeed.com.

I have not owned either so I don't feel qualified to answer such a specific question. Volvo motors have a history of being very reliable. If the vehicle will be used for towing, maybe you can ask about its ability to do that well.

swedespeed is more active.

My wife has 08 3.2 and it is an excellent car. you will find some people say the 8 cyl. is more reliable on swede speed. you will find many more 3.2 for sale than 8 cyl. I'd buy from a dealer and get a CPO with an extended warranty, as these cars seem to require wheel bearing pretty often and other small stuff. the ones to avoid are the older ones with the trans (T6?) that was notorious for failing.

I agree S-Works regarding the activity here, maybe that's a sign in itself? Anyhow, we own a 04' T6. My advise, based on my issues with my xc90, is to dig deep within here to find what your looking for. It seemed for me that's how I could gain some insight as to some issues experiencing. I wish I had only looked prior to buying used, may have changed my mind about the T6 with a GM transmission. Being low activity, maybe waiting around a while for a response! Best of luck to you.

I just purchased xc90 2006 2.5T 5 cylinder. I ruled out the v8 because of gas mileage. I have a 2008v70 with the 6 cylincer and no problems. I chose the 2.5 because of reliability, availability of parts , and more people know this engine so it is easier for one to work on. I have seen tranny problems with the v8. There are other forums that have a dedicated xc90 page., just look.

Thanks for your reply Fred.

I kind of like the 6 better than the V8. My Indy said solid engine, just plan on spending $750 for the timing belt water pump service every 60K.

It's for my wife, so she will decide which engine. They are equiped pretty much the same.
