Rear wheel bearings XC90 WARNING, lessons learned
I heard a very minor noise coming from the rear. XC90 2005 51000 miles. Could be a tire issue (balance, uneven wear) or maybe a wheel bearing. Well it was a wheel bearing. Actually both bearings. I replaced the right side first and because it was already late I decided to do the left side the next day.
Well that was my mistake. Within 20 miles of driving the next day the bearing gave away completely, causing way more damage then just the wheel hub. The following parts were damaged and had to be replaced. Wheel hub, Rotor, Brake caliper, Brake pads, Emergency brake pads, Drive shaft boot (the C/V joint was still ok), ABS speed sensor.
If you hear a noise get it checked out before you run into the same situation as I did.
I'm still don't understand that there was no recall for this issue. Replacing a wheel bearing by 51000 miles is way too early.
