Default Start Prevented - Key problem

I've got an 06 XC90 (V8).

One of my keys wouldn't stay flipped in, which was very annoying - so I attempted to fix it. I didn't realize that there were any components in the keyed section of the keyfob, I thought it was all in the remote side. Needless to say, I've screwed up / broken whatever antenna/chip doohickey is in the key section of the keyfob.

The remote still works, my car just says "start prevented" with the key now.

My question is this. Can I pick up a used key on ebay and carefully move my keyed section and remote over to one that isn't broken, or does it need to be programmed as well? I know something needs to be programmed, as I've seen it referenced many times while googling this problem, but I'm not clear as to whether it is the remote section of the key or the doohickey I broke.

Can someone tell me what it was that I broke - what it is called and how it works?

Thanks.

Ruined my weekend :-(
