Default Tires advice needed- AGAIN?

My wife drives V8 XC90 w/ Michelin tires (235/60/18) -the car presently has almost 16,000 miles, and it looks like it will need new tires by 20,000 miles.

I don't like to wait until there is no thread on the tires when changing them.

I also believe that this heavy car/SUV does need V-rated tires (2 years ago decided to save $100.00 on the tires for my 850 and put H-rated tires -cornering got worse.)

I wonder if there is anyone on this forum who changed their tires from OEM Michelins to Nokian WR SUV, and would like to know what was your driving impressions re:

1.Grip
2. noise
3. wear-out

Thanks alot.

P.S.

Car is driven mostly in the city (NorthEast) w/ occaisonal highway, it does snow here in the winter, but most driving is on the dry/wet road, not on snow.

Check your tire pressure. If set too low the tires will wear too fast. We found that hour tires (XC90 V8) were set to 32 PSi from factory even if owner's manual and sticker in driver's door says 39 PSI.

Just replaced the tires on my '05 XC 90. Got 28K on the original Pirelli Scorpion Zeros, but they have been noisy, and harsh riding for the last year. They wore really strangely too. I had the balance checked and rebalanced several times, but it didn't help. I was getting ready to get another car, but just replaced the tires with Yokohama Geolanders, 235-65 x 17. It resulted in a totally different ride!! Quiet like it was when the vehicle was new, better grip and cornering. I run 35 lbs, the same as I did with the Pirellis. Only time will tell about the longevity, but I am pleased with the purchase so far.

Niel, thanks for your reply.

I note that you have 17" wheels, our XC90 has 18" wheels, so there are just 2-3 tires to choose from in that size. Puttting diffrerent size will give dealer a reson to blame any suspension/syeereing problems on the "wrong" tires, so I will stick to OEM size for now.

The reason I say that dealer will blame it on the tire size is that, when I asked the service adviser if I can use 255/55/18 size tires, I got reply saying that I have to put OEM size otherwise I can get all sorts of problems such as bad wheel bearing!

P.S.

I already bought 4 Nokian tires from eBay ($725 including delivery), did not put them on yet -I am waiting to get more from OEM tires, which still have some usable tread left.

Ihad the same problem on my T6 AWD with Michelin Tires... they stink! I purchased and installed Yokohama HTS Geolander G052... only hitch is that they don't come in OEM 235/60/18! I checked with Tire rack and decided to go with the wider 255/55/18 (same overall diameter) and pressed with the Yokohamas. I think the ride is improved and they look alot better than the Michelins. I have put about 10K miles on them... ride is better, tires look better, and the wear seems to be normal (no issues with uneven wear). My only concern is that the dealership said I should have stuck with OEM sizes... I disagree. I would recommend going bigger and with the Yokos.

Cheers,
Russ

leeclanual,
Thank you for your advise. I cannot put Yoko tires since I already bought Nokians. I just wanted to know what to expect from Nokian tires.

How is it going with your new Nokian WRs in terms of:
1.Grip
2. noise
3. wear-out ???

I am thinking of buying these tires. Would you recommend them asthe "all-seasons-tires"? Are you satisfied with them?

Thank you.

I've seen better result with other tires that have the same size but different brand and different speed rating. The original seems to wear fast on edge of tires. Tire pressure is the main key to keep tire from wearing abormally. not to mention keep the suspension components as tight as it should be. The 17" pirelli Scorpion Zero have been replaced with Scorpion STR according to Pirelli. For best choice in 17" wheels i would choose the Michelin 4X4 syhncrhone or the MXV4 energy plus as replacement (seems to last longer than others). Do not replace tires to different size if possible, since it will throw speedometer andABS, Roll stablilty control and the DSTC out of wackif diameter ofthe tires are excessivelydifferent.

I just putNokianson last week, OEM were at 26000 miles, but had uneven wear, and I did not want to take chances in the winter.

Drove car only once since, so did not get much feedback, but noted that ride comfort is good (same as Michelins) and noise levelis even lower thenOEM tires ( but OEM were worn out).
I should be able to report more after 3-6K miles

I have 20" Zinik rims and run Pirelli Scorpion Zeros in the summer and Bridgestone Bizzacks LM -25 275/45R for the winter.

I actually like the Blizzaks for overall ride and handling, but I also have a modified Heico Suspension and IPD sway bars that tighten the ride - either way, you will see faster wear on higher performance tires - it's the nature of the beast.
