Hello all,
Am new to forum, have owned a 740 for 13 years, replaced with 2005 XC90 (owned). It is FWD, only 13,800 miles and the transmission has died. Has anyone else had this problem? Am disgusted that this happened on such a young car. Is currently at the dealership awaiting shipment of a new transmission. Best part is that this new transmission will only be covered for the remainder of the "new car warranty period" which is another 2 years. I loved this car, but I think this will be my last VOLVO.

I have seen several items posted about transmission issues. What are your thoughts on a "goodwill buyback" or "tradein assistance"? Are there any data out there about the frequency of early transmission failures? How long can I reasonably expect this new tranny to function or is this just the beginning of problems?

There have been similar postings on volvoforums where XC90 owners with w. 5 speed have had transmission failure. I think the 5 speed is a GM built transmission. The6 speed for the V8 is built by Yamaha.

I have a 2004 T6 65kms. Transmission got stuck in 3rd probably was on way to collapse (see below). Dealer is replacing whole transmission - seems the problem is faulty seals in the cooler in the radiator. From what I have seen on thse sites this is not wildly unusual with T6s. I would definitely recommend anyone with a T6 coming out of a Volvo warranty to get an external warranty.

sounds familiar. I also have a 2005 XC90 with 78,000 miles (lots of driving for business) and the transmission just died recently. About 6 months prior, another owner of this model stopped me in a parking lot to ask me if I had any transmission problems b/c she had to replace hers...at the time I had no problems. Needless to say, I'm EXTREMELY disgusted with volvo and curious to know how many others are dealing with this.

I got mine done under warranty even though car was 3yrs 4 mths old (I think 3 yrs is what's on offer in NZ). Did take 7 weeks though - had to get parts shipped out. They said the problem was in the radiator and it was replaced with a new improved unit - so they must know about it. Is yours covered or not? I would kick up a stink if they are not paying for it. if you want to contact directly email at rod@husseyco.co.nz.
